Patios

Planning the Space

Think about what will go on the patio before choosing the stone. A dining table and chairs need more room than most people expect, and the spot that catches the evening sun may not be next to the back door. We mark out the area with you on site so you can see the size before anything is dug.

On a sloping garden a patio may need a retaining wall or steps to create a level area, and we build those as part of the same job.

Our Experience with New Patios

We are a family run groundworks business based in Staplehurst, and we bring over 20 years of experience to every new patios job across Kent, East and West Sussex and south-east London.

The same small, friendly team surveys the job, prepares the ground and finishes the surface, so you deal with the people doing the work from the first visit to the final sweep.

We have worked on behalf of Kent County Council and utility companies, our team is registered with the Street Works Qualifications Register, and we are approved under the Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme.

Choosing the Material

Sandstone, granite, limestone, slate, porcelain, concrete flags and block paving all make good patios. Natural stone gives variation and character, porcelain is dense and easy to wipe clean, and block paving can tie in with your driveway. We will explain how much upkeep each one needs before you choose.

New Patios

Built to Stay Level

Every new patio sits on a compacted sub-base with a fall away from the house so rain runs off. Slabs are bedded on mortar and pointed, and a channel drain can go in along the house wall where the levels are tight.

Bigger garden rebuilds that combine a patio with paths, walls and steps can be run as one project, with one team and one quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

New Patios: Your Questions Answered

How big should my patio be?

Measure the furniture you plan to use and allow room to walk round it and pull chairs out. We can mark out a few sizes on site so you can see which works best.

Do I need planning permission for a patio?

A ground-level patio in a back garden does not normally need permission. Raised platforms, listed buildings and conservation areas can be different, so check with your council if any of those apply.

Can you lay a patio on a sloping garden?

Yes. We either cut into the slope and hold it back with a retaining wall, or build the patio up on one side, adding steps where they are needed.

Which materials can a new patio be made from?

Natural stone such as sandstone, granite, limestone and slate, porcelain, concrete flags and block paving are all options. Each has its own look, feel underfoot and upkeep, and we talk through them at the visit.

Do you offer free quotes for patios?

We visit, look at the ground, the levels and where the water goes, then send a written quote setting out what the job involves. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation to go ahead.
