Patios

Riven or Sawn Sandstone

Indian sandstone is a natural stone, so every slab varies a little in tone and markings, which is much of its appeal. Riven slabs have a split, textured face and uneven thickness that suits cottage gardens and traditional houses. Sawn slabs have smooth faces and crisp edges for a more modern finish.

Colours range from warm buffs and golds to greys and darker mixes. We can lay a single slab size or a mixed-size pattern, which gives a random, natural look without obvious repeating joints.

Laying Natural Stone Properly

Sandstone needs more care than concrete flags because the slabs vary in thickness and the stone is porous. Each slab is laid on a full bed of mortar rather than spot dabs, with the back primed so the bond holds, which stops rocking and water collecting underneath. Joints are then pointed with mortar or a jointing compound.

The patio is set with a fall away from the house and below the damp-proof course. Sandstone weathers naturally over time, and a stone sealer can be applied once it has settled if you want to reduce staining from leaves and spills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indian Sandstone Patios: Your Questions Answered

Riven or sawn: which should I choose?

Riven has a textured, natural surface with good grip and suits traditional settings. Sawn is smooth and uniform, giving a sharper, contemporary look. Both are the same stone, so it is mainly a question of style.

Does Indian sandstone need sealing?

It is not essential. Sealing can make the stone easier to clean and less prone to staining, but some sealers darken the colour slightly, so we will explain the options first.

Why does a sandstone patio go green?

Shade and damp let algae grow on the porous surface. Regular brushing helps, and our patio cleaning service can bring it back if it has built up.

Is Indian sandstone slippery?

Riven sandstone has a naturally grippy face. Sawn sandstone is smoother, and any stone gets slippery once algae builds up, so keeping it clean matters most.

What colours does Indian sandstone come in?

Shades range from greys and buffs to warm browns and mixed tones, and every batch varies a little because it is a natural stone. We can show you samples so you can see how the colour looks in your garden light.
